The idea is simple.

With solar, that often means storing daytime generation to use in the evening.

With wind, it can mean storing energy when the turbine is generating strongly, then using it when the wind drops or the home demand increases.

In Ian’s video, the wind turbine was linked with a large battery storage system, using a SigEnergy SigenStor three-phase inverter and 45kWh of battery capacity.

That allowed the customer to make better use of the electricity being generated on site.

Why this project needed such a big battery

45kWh of battery storage sounds huge.

For many homes, it would be.

But this was not a normal home.

The property had high electricity demand, electric heating and two properties effectively combined into one. Ian explains that, during a power outage, 45kWh could be used in around 8 to 12 hours because of the level of demand.

That shows why battery sizing has to be designed around the property.

A battery that seems large on paper may be completely proportionate for a high-demand rural home.

It also shows why you should not compare battery sizes without understanding the usage.

The right battery is not just the biggest one.

It is the one that matches the property, the generation and the way the home uses electricity.

Wind turbines and winter energy use

One of the interesting things about wind is that it can be useful when homes often need more energy.

In winter, many properties use more electricity for heating, lighting and general demand.

At the same time, solar generation is usually lower because days are shorter and the sun is lower in the sky.

Wind can help fill that gap in the right location.

In Ian’s example, the customer wanted to use the energy from the wind turbine to help power the home, including heating, rather than relying heavily on the grid.

That is where wind becomes especially interesting.

Not because it replaces solar for everyone, but because it can complement a wider home energy system where the conditions are right.

The customer said the turbine paid for itself in around 4 to 5 years, helped by the amount of electricity generated and feed-in tariff payments from an existing scheme.

That is impressive, but it does not mean every wind turbine will pay back that quickly.

This was a specific site with strong wind, high energy demand and an existing tariff arrangement.
